LAHORE, Pakistan: Pakistan’s former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has been entrusted with major new duties by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), signalling a pivotal move aimed at strengthening the country’s cricket development structure.

According to PCB sources, Sarfaraz has been assigned to oversee Pakistan Shaheens and the national Under-19 team, a role that places him at the heart of nurturing upcoming talent.

This appointment is being viewed as a significant step in his transition from international cricketer to developmental leader.

Officials familiar with the development said Sarfaraz will monitor team coaches, supervise tour planning and execution, and ensure seamless operations during both domestic and international engagements.

He will also accompany the squads during training camps and home series, offering guidance drawn from his long international tenure.

Sarfaraz, an accomplished wicketkeeper-batter, featured in 54 Tests, scoring 3,031 runs with four centuries and 21 fifties. His limited-overs record includes 2,315 runs in 117 ODIs and 818 runs in 61 T20Is, highlighted by multiple key performances.

Widely respected for his leadership, Sarfaraz famously captained Pakistan to victory in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, routing India by 180 runs in the final.

He also maintained a 70% ODI win rate and secured a 62.5% win rate during the 2019 Cricket World Cup. In T20Is, he posted an impressive 78.37% win rate, winning 29 of 37 matches—one of the best records for a Pakistan captain.

The 38-year-old last represented Pakistan in the 2023 Perth Test against Australia, his final appearance in the red-ball format.
