Television footage showed the mangled first carriage of the passenger train partly perched on the last carriage of the goods train, as police and rescue teams worked to pull out survivors while a crowd gathered along the parallel tracks.

Railway authorities have announced that a detailed inquiry will be conducted into the incident.

India’s railway network, the fourth largest in the world, is undergoing a $30 billion upgrade with new trains and modern stations.

However, rail accidents remain common in the country, which witnessed one of its worst recent collisions in 2023, when three trains collided in the southern state of Odisha, resulting in 288 deaths.
