RIYADH: Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Salman, has announced the launch of the “King Salman Gate”, a multi-use development project in Makkah, aimed at transforming urban access and services around the Grand Mosque.
The project spanning up to 12 million square metres of gross floor area is set to redefine Makkah’s central district, establishing it as a global model for modern city planning, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Wednesday.
The project aims to enhance access to the Grand Mosque, elevate service quality, and enrich the overall experience for pilgrims and visitors, aligning with the Pilgrim Experience Programme under Saudi Vision 2030.
Strategically situated adjacent to the Grand Mosque, the King Salman Gate development will include residential, hospitality, commercial, and cultural facilities, with the capacity to accommodate nearly 900,000 worshippers both indoors and outdoors.
The project will feature integrated public transport links to ensure convenient and efficient access, while blending Makkah’s cultural heritage with contemporary architectural design.
Additionally, approximately 19,000 square metres of heritage sites will be restored and developed, preserving the city’s historical and spiritual legacy.
RUA AlHaram AlMakki Company, a subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund (PIF), is developing the project, which is expected to generate more than 300,000 jobs by 2036.
The company aims to advance sustainable urban development around the Grand Mosque, combining innovative infrastructure solutions with the preservation of Makkah’s spiritual and cultural essence.
