ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Wednesday held a telephonic conversation with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi and discussed the evolving regional situation and bilateral ties, Pakistan’s Foreign Office said.

According to a statement issued by Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the two ministers reviewed fraternal Pakistan-Iran relations and discussed the evolving regional situation and ongoing diplomatic efforts to promote peace and security.

“They reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation as well as their collaboration in multilateral forums,” it said.

The conversation came at a time when US President Donald Trump had presented a 20-point peace plan to end the war in Gaza.  He also gave Hamas an ultimatum of “three or four days” to respond to his Gaza peace plan, warning of severe consequences if the Palestinian group rejected the proposal.

The Israeli army has killed over 66,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in Gaza since October 2023. The relentless bombardment has rendered the enclave uninhabitable and led to starvation and the spread of diseases.

Pakistan and Iran have also renewed their push to enhance bilateral trade in recent months. The two countries exchanged 12 agreements and memoranda of understanding for bilateral cooperation in diverse fields during Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to Pakistan in August.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also met in Doha last month on the sidelines of the emergency Arab–Islamic summit convened after Israel bombed the Qatari capital on September 9.

Both leaders expressed their solidarity and support for Qatar and called for unity among the ranks of the Ummah in the face of Israeli aggression.

It may be recalled that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had welcomed the recently signed strategic defence agreement between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, calling it a step toward building a broader regional security framework.

During his address at the United Nations General Assembly 80th Session in New York, President Pezeshkian described the Saudi Arabia and Pakistan defence pact as a step toward a comprehensive regional security framework.
