ISLAMABAD: Pakistan spinner Mohammad Nawaz entered cricket’s elite upon clinching a hat-trick during the T20I tri-series final against Afghanistan at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
He took four wickets in just his first ten deliveries, helping restrict Afghanistan during their chase of 142 runs. His feat places him alongside only two others in Pakistan’s T20I history.
Nawaz struck early in Afghanistan’s chase of 142, taking four wickets in his first ten deliveries. The collapse began with the dismissal of Rahmanullah Gurbaz (5), followed by a flurry of wickets that left Afghanistan reeling. Sediqullah Atal (13) and Ibrahim Zadran (9) offered brief resistance, but Nawaz’s introduction in the sixth over turned the tide.
He removed Darwish Rasooli (0) and Azmatullah Omarzai (0) on consecutive deliveries to end the over, and completed his hat-trick by dismissing Ibrahim Zadran (9) with the first ball of his next over.
The final blow came when Karim Janat (0) fell cheaply, sealing Pakistan’s dominance over the Rashid Khan-led side.
Nawaz is now the third Pakistani bowler to claim a T20I hat-trick, joining Faheem Ashraf (vs Sri Lanka, 2017) and Mohammad Hasnain (vs Sri Lanka, 2019).
As per ICC cricket records, 72 bowlers have etched their names into history by achieving this rare feat. These hat-tricks span ICC tournaments, bilateral series, and regional qualifiers. Below is the complete list of T20I hat-tricks to date.
