AMMAN: Jordan will host a meeting between the United States and Syria to discuss the ongoing situation in the war-torn country and explore the prospects for reconstruction, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.

The meeting on Tuesday, which will be attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani and US special envoy for Syria Thomas Barrack, “will discuss the situation in Syria and ways to support the process of rebuilding Syria on foundations that guarantee its security, stability, and sovereignty,” according to a statement.

Responding to the announcement of the meeting, Barrack expressed in a post on X, “our collective determination to move toward a future in which Syria and all of its people can live in peace, security, and prosperity.

The meeting will be a continuation of the discussions held in Amman on 19 July, which focused on the deadly clashes in Sweida, a Syrian province with a Druze majority.

Soon after the clashes, Israel struck military targets in Syria, claiming to be the saviours of the Druze minority.

The escalation came after Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a stern warning to the Syrian government, cautioning it “leave the Druze alone” in Suwayda.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu justified the strikes, stating that they aimed to “rescue our Druze brothers and eliminate regime armed groups.”

However, the two agreed to a US brokered ceasefire, after days of bloodshed that had killed over 300 people.

Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa also vowed that those behind violence against the Druze minority would be held accountable after deadly clashes in their southern heartland.
