ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Thursday placed cricketer Haider Ali under provisional suspension as he became the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation by Greater Manchester Police in the United Kingdom.
The PCB confirmed that the inquiry relates to an undisclosed incident that allegedly occurred during the Pakistan Shaheens’ recent tour of England, though specific details remain tightly under wraps.
In an official statement, the board emphasised its commitment to both player welfare and respect for international legal procedures, stating that Ali has been provided with appropriate legal support to protect his rights during the process. However, the board underscored that it is essential to let UK legal authorities conduct their investigation without interference.
“The PCB fully respects the legal procedures and processes of the United Kingdom and acknowledges the importance of allowing the investigation to run its due course,” the statement read.
“Accordingly, Haider Ali has been provisionally suspended with immediate effect pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.”
A rising career paused
At just 24 years old, Haider Ali’s cricketing journey has already seen highs and hurdles. Since making his international debut in 2020, the right-handed batter has represented Pakistan in 35 T20Is and 2 ODIs, amassing 547 runs, including three half-centuries. He also featured in the 2021 and 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cups, considered as one of Pakistan’s brightest young prospects.
But with the provisional suspension now in effect, his future with the national side is on hold, at least until the investigation concludes.
PCB’s next steps
The PCB stated it would await the outcome of the legal process before taking any further disciplinary measures under its Code of Conduct. In the meantime, the board will not offer additional comments on the matter.
“Appropriate action, if required, will be taken once the legal process is complete,” the board added.
