ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Ion Iliescu, former President of Romania and a prominent figure in the country’s modern history.
In a message from the Presidency, he extended heartfelt condolences—on behalf of the people and Government of Pakistan and in his personal capacity—to the Government and people of Romania, as well as to Iliescu’s family.
President Zardari praised Iliescu’s leadership during Romania’s transition to democracy, calling it a defining chapter in the nation’s history. He said Iliescu’s service would be remembered with respect and admiration.
He also offered prayers for the departed soul and expressed solidarity with the Romanian nation in this time of mourning.
Ion Iliescu, who steered the country through its post-communist transition and laid the groundwork for EU and NATO membership, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 95.
He had been hospitalised with lung cancer for the past two months. The government has announced that he will be given a state funeral.
It is with deep regret that the government announces the passing of the former President of Romania, Mr Ion Iliescu,” a government statement said.
