ISLAMABAD: United States (US) President Donald Trump on Friday introduced a sweeping set of import tariffs, with rates reaching up to 50 per cent on Brazilian goods and 41 per cent on imports from Syria.
However, duties on imports from Pakistan have been reduced from 29 per cent to 19 per cent, following a new agreement between the US and Pakistan to jointly develop the latter’s oil reserves, CNN reported, citing the US president’s announcement on Thursday.
The US has announced an increase in trade tariffs on Canada from 25% to 35%. Meanwhile, Indian exports face a 25% tariff, while Pakistan is subject to a 19% rate. https://t.co/HtmEbCgViY pic.twitter.com/BR51zSqlE8

Tariffs on Indian goods remain unchanged at 25 per cent, as announced earlier in the week. Canadian imports, previously taxed at 25 per cent, will now face a 35 per cent tariff.
The revised tariffs are scheduled to come into force in one week, with additional sector-specific levies — including on copper — also being applied to certain trading partners.
Targeting trade partners
According to Trump’s order, a “universal” tariff of 10 per cent on incoming goods will remain in place, a rate initially introduced on 2 April.
Trump signed the extensive executive order targeting 69 trade partners, sharply increasing import duties across the board, with some reaching up to 50 per cent.
The White House described the changes as part of a new “reciprocal tariff” system aimed at addressing what Trump referred to as ongoing trade imbalances and threats to national security.
