RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has welcomed the announcement by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela regarding their intention to recognise the State of Palestine next September.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry, in a statement on Thursday, said the Kingdom commended these decisions as pivotal for the two-state solution, reiterating the international community’s consensus on the need to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people.

The Kingdom also called on other nations to take similar steps in support of peace.

The move follows a similar announcement by the United Kingdom and France earlier this month.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Prime Minister, Mohammed Mustafa, expressed gratitude to the governments of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and France for their efforts in hosting the high-level International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Question and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

This conference, held at the United Nations headquarters in New York City and co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France, aimed to advance the two-state solution.

The Palestinian PM praised the contributions of Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan and French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot for coordinating the eight working groups established to ensure broad international participation in drafting the conference outcomes.

It is pertinent to mention that the Palestinian Authority controls parts of the West Bank through the Fatah party, led by Mahmoud Abbas, while Hamas runs Gaza.

Since October 2023, Israel has killed more than 60,000 people in Gaza, and 154 people, including 89 children, have died from malnutrition.
