ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Wednesday that Pakistan will dispatch two consignments of food aid to Palestine, aimed at supporting the people of Gaza amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
While chairing a Federal Cabinet meeting in Islamabad on Wednesday, the Prime Minister said that instructions have been issued to the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to ensure the timely dispatch of the aid, Radio Pakistan reported.
PM Sharif strongly condemned the ongoing violence in Gaza, calling it unprecedented in history, and denounced the acts of oppression being carried out by Israel.
“The suffering of the children of Gaza is unbearable. No one with a conscience can turn away,” he said.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to advocating for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and supporting the rights of the Palestinian people.
He praised Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar for his successful diplomatic engagements during a recent visit to the United States.
Looking ahead to the UN General Assembly in September, PM Sharif vowed that Pakistan would join the international community in calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
Hunger-related Gaza death toll rises to 154
According to the Gaza health ministry, the total number of people who have starved to death during Israel’s assault on Gaza has risen to 154, including 89 children.
Gaza hospitals have recorded seven new deaths “due to famine and malnutrition”, it said.
Jordan’s king says Gaza crisis worst in ‘modern history’
Jordan’s King Abdullah has called the “humanitarian catastrophe” unfolding in the Gaza Strip the worst in modern history.
“Gaza is witnessing a humanitarian catastrophe that exceeds anything we have witnessed in modern history,” he said, adding that Jordan was in contact with international partners to pressure for an end to the war, now in its 22nd month.
Gaza death toll reaches 60,138
Israel’s military offensive in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of 60,138 Palestinians and left 146,269 injured since October 7, 2023, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
In the past 24 hours alone, at least 103 Palestinians—among them 60 individuals seeking humanitarian aid—were killed, and 399 others were injured in Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip.
The ministry also reported that one body was recovered from the rubble of earlier Israeli attacks, as stated in a message shared on Telegram.
