Pakistan Met Office Issues GLOF Alert for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan

ISLAMABAD:  The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an alert about likely Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan due to the current weather condition.

The PMD issued an alert on Tuesday that states, “A wet spell is likely to affect Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan in the current week”.

“Heavy falls”

It said that during this period, “scattered rain and thunderstorms’ with isolated heavy falls are expected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan”.

The PMD warned, “The prevailing weather conditions increase the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), and flash flood events in vulnerable regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan”.

“Remain alert”

It further said that all concerned are advised to remain alert and take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation.

Earlier on Monday, National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) of NDMA has also issued multiple impact-based weather alerts in view of the ongoing monsoon system, which is expected to affect various parts of the country over the next 24 to 72 hours, according to APP.

These alerts highlight the risks of heavy rainfall, urban flooding, flash floods, strong winds, and associated structural and travel-related hazards.
