Pakistan Army Chief discusses evolving regional security landscape with Iranian Chief of General Staff

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan and Iran have agreed to enhance military-to-military cooperation and improve security mechanisms along the shared border, the military’s media wing said on Tuesday.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in a statement on Tuesday said that Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of Pakistan visited General Staff Headquarters in Tehran, Iran and held a meeting with Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces.

“The two military leaders engaged in discussions on the evolving regional security landscape, with particular focus on strengthening bilateral defence ties,” it said.

The statement further said key areas of mutual interest including enhancing military-to-military cooperation and improving security mechanisms along the shared border came under discussion.

It added the two sides also explored avenues for transforming the border regions into zones of trade and economic connectivity, thereby contributing to regional stability and prosperity.

“Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir was accorded a warm welcome upon his arrival, including a ceremonial guard of honour presented by a well-turned-out contingent of the Iranian Armed Forces,” the ISPR said.

It said the Army Chief alongside the Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif earlier met with Ayatollah Syed Ali Hosseini Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran and Masoud Pezeshkian, President of Iran.

“The COAS is on an official visit to Türkiye, Iran and Azerbaijan along with the Prime Minister’s delegation visiting the three friendly countries,” the statement concluded.
