GAZA CITY, Palestine: At least 27 Palestinians were killed, and dozens injured in fresh Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip on Sunday, medics said, as the overall death toll since October 2023 has surpassed 53,939.
Israel has intensified its ongoing bombardment campaign amid warnings of starvation in the besieged Palestinian territory, with the UN agency for Palestinian refugees calling for the urgent entry of aid to prevent further humanitarian catastrophe.
According to the health authorities, a local journalist and a senior rescue service official were also killed.
Recent fatalities in the ongoing Israeli campaign occurred in separate airstrikes targeting areas across the Gaza Strip.
In the northern town of Jabalia, an airstrike struck the home of local journalist Hassan Majdi Abu Warda, killing him along with several members of his family.
In central Gaza’s Nuseirat area, another airstrike claimed the lives of Ashraf Abu Nar—a senior official in the civil emergency service, and his wife, who were both inside their residence at the time.
Additional casualties were also reported in Khan Younis, located in the southern part of the territory.
UNRWA calls for allowing more aid in Gaza
The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has called for the entry of hundreds of aid trucks into Gaza to ease starvation in the war-hit Palestinian territory.
“A meaningful and uninterrupted flow of aid into Gaza is the only way to prevent the current disaster from spiralling further,” the UN agency said in a statement on X.

Israeli soldiers killed in Southern Gaza
The Palestinian group Hamas has claimed that several Israeli soldiers were killed and wounded in an ambush in southern Gaza.
According to a statement from its armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, fighters blew up a house where Israeli troops had taken position east of the town of al-Qarara in eastern Khan Younis on Tuesday.
It said several Israeli soldiers were killed and injured in the blast.
Gaza death toll rises
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the Israeli bombardment has killed 53,939 people in Gaza and injured 122,797 since October 7, 2023.
At least 3,785 people have been killed and 10,756 injured in the enclave since March 18 when Israel broke a two-month ceasefire, the ministry said.
On Friday, the Israeli military said it had conducted more strikes in Gaza overnight, hitting 75 targets including weapons storage facilities and rocket launchers.
