ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Sunday welcomed statements from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) endorsing the recent ceasefire agreement between Pakistan and India, describing the development as a step towards lasting peace and stability in South Asia.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), Islamabad expressed gratitude for the UN Secretary-General’s assessment that this development represents a positive step toward promoting an environment conducive to durable peace and stability in South Asia.

Reaffirming its long-standing position, Pakistan emphasised that a just and peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute remains central to achieving enduring peace in the region.

The statement reiterated Pakistan’s call for a resolution in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

“Pakistan attaches high importance to the role of the United Nations in promoting peace and regional stability,” the Foreign Office said, underlining the country’s commitment to “constructive and result-oriented dialogue” grounded in the principles of the UN Charter and international law.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Office acknowledged the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) support for the ceasefire and its principled call for dialogue and peaceful resolution of outstanding issues, including Jammu and Kashmir, in accordance with UNSC resolutions.

“We deeply value the OIC’s unwavering commitment to regional peace,” it said.

“The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation welcomed the ceasefire between the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Republic of India and commended all countries that made sincere efforts to mediate and bring the two sides together to reach this agreement,” the OIC said in a statement.

It added that the General Secretariat called on the international Community to redouble efforts and encourage Pakistan and India to engage in a constructive dialogue to resolve all outstanding issues, including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, through peaceful means and in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Meanwhile, President of the UN General Assembly Philemon Yang has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan.

In a statement, he urged continued diplomatic efforts and dialogue to resolve differences and achieve lasting peace and stability in line with the UN Charter and international law.

Ties between India and Pakistan deteriorated after a deadly attack in the Pahalgam area of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir that killed 26.

India swiftly blamed Pakistan for the attack. However, Islamabad denied involvement, with tensions reaching a boiling point after both countries exchanged drone and missile attacks. Later, both countries agreed on a ceasefire and holding talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site.
