KABUL: Afghanistan Minister for Higher Education in the Taliban Government Neda Mohammad Nadeem on Thursday defended his decision to ban girls and women from higher education in the country.  He claimed that the universities were declared off limits to girls as students were not following directives including a proper dress code.

The ban has triggered a world backlash as many countries including Muslim nations also condemned this act.  The Minister for Education said that female students were not following instructions including the proper dress code. He said that some subjects are not suitable for females as subjects like engineering and agriculture do not match the honor and dignity of girls’ students and Afghan culture.

The foreign ministers of the G-7 group countries asked the Taliban government to revoke the ban and warned that gender oppression may amount to a crime against humanity. The G-7 group includes France, Canada, Italy, Germany, the UK, the US, Japan, and the European Union.

Saudi Arabia has also expressed “astonishment and regret” at the ban on female education and urged the Taliban to reverse their decision. But the Minister for Education hit back at the international community and said the world should not interfere in Afghanistan’s internal matters.
