NEW DELHI: Jay Shah has taken charge as the chairman of the ICC after Greg Barclay opted not to seek a third term.
Jay Shah took a major step in his administrative career after taking over as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), reports Indian media.
Succeeding Greg Barclay, the 35-year-old became the youngest member of the apex board. It was earlier reported that the Indian administrator will assume his role on December 1, 2024, after Barclay decided not to seek a third term after first being appointed for the position in 2020.

Jay Shah started his journey in administration back in 2009 when he was named as an executive board member of the Central Board of Cricket, Ahmedabad.
In September 2013, Shah helped in building the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad after becoming the joint secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA). In 2015, Shah entered the BCCI as a member of the finance and marketing committee.
Shah kept growing in stature as, in 2019, he became the youngest BCCI secretary at the age of 31. His role in the BCCI held a lot of importance as Indian cricket took major steps, strengthening its position in the globe.

Shah’s first major achievement as BCCI was the Eden Gardens in Kolkata hosting India’s first-ever Day-Test match against Bangladesh in November 2019. In 2020 and 2021, when the world was reeling from the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, Shah made sure that the Indian Premier League (IPL) took place with foreign players.
In 2020, the United Arab Emirates hosted the IPL, while the 2021 edition was partly held in India and the Gulf country. From 2022 onwards, India started hosting the IPL at full capacity. During that phase, several tournaments around the world were either postponed indefinitely or cancelled.
In October 2022, the BCCI implemented a pay equity policy for its contracted women cricketers; INR 15 lakhs for Tests, INR 6 lakhs for ODIs and INR 3 lakhs in T20Is.
“It was my commitment to our women cricketers and pay equity is an important step towards tackling discrimination. This is a landmark decision as we enter a new era in India Cricket. I would like to thank my colleagues in the BCCI Apex Council,” Shah had said in a statement.
Last year, with Shah as secretary, the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) also took place. During his tenure, the BCCI also struck a major media rights deal of INR 48,390 crore for five years. It made the IPL the second-most valued league in the globe in terms of per-match value.
Jay Shah was elected unopposed as the chairman of the ICC. He got the backing of 15 out of the 16 members of the International Cricket Council, including Cricket Australia and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). At 35 years, he will become the youngest ever to take over the role of the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Jay Shah will be serving two terms of three years each as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). In the current scenario, the chairman of the ICC serves three terms of two years each. After serving this tenure, he will be eligible to become BCCI president.
