Saudi Arabia to Host Donors’ Conference for Displaced and Refugees in Sahel and Lake Chad Basin

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia is set to host the Donors’ Conference to Support the Displaced and Refugees in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) headquarters in Jeddah.

The conference, organized by OIC in coordination with the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), aims to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.

The conference is being held within the framework of implementing the resolution of the 49th session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM). The conference seeks to mobilize resources and raise global awareness about the displacement and refugee challenges faced by millions in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin. The region, which includes countries such as Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Mali, and Burkina Faso, has been facing humanitarian needs.

Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, is expected to address the conference’s opening session alongside the OIC Secretary-General, Hissein Brahim Taha.

The conference will witness a high-level session on the challenges of the humanitarian situation in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin, with the participation of a number of prominent speakers, including Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Advisor at the Royal Court of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Supervisor General of the KSrelief, Ms. Joyce Musaya, Acting Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator at the United Nations, Mr. Raouf Mazou, Assistant High Commissioner for Operations at the UNHCR, Mrs. Zubaida Abubakar Umar, Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Nigeria, in addition to a representative of the European Union (EU).

The conference aims to mobilize resources for humanitarian and development initiatives with a special focus on the United Nations’ coordinated humanitarian response plans, in addition to raising awareness of the multifaceted crisis and addressing it by building strong partnerships to enhance effective humanitarian response and greater support for long-term solutions.
