WASHINGTON, USA: US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions on Monday, focusing on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the recent political turmoil in Bangladesh.
Modi shared that the conversation emphasized India’s support for the early return of peace and stability in Ukraine. The two leaders agreed on the importance of restoring normalcy and ensuring the safety of minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh.
The White House acknowledged Modi’s recent visits to Poland and Ukraine, commending his efforts and affirming their mutual support for a peaceful resolution to the conflict based on international law and the UN Charter.
Modi’s Ukraine visit, the first by an Indian prime minister, occurred during a critical phase of the war, as Russia continues its offensive in eastern Ukraine. Modi encouraged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to engage in peace talks with Russia.
The conversation also covered the situation in Bangladesh, where protests led to the ousting of long-time leader Sheikh Hasina. The unrest, which started over job quotas, escalated into widespread demonstrations resulting in significant violence and the installation of an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
Modi expressed concern over attacks on minorities, particularly Hindus, during the protests, a sensitive issue given the criticism his own government has faced regarding minority rights in India.
