OTTAWA: Flag-hoisting ceremonies to celebrate Pakistan’s 78th Independence Day were held at the Pakistan High Commission in Ottawa, as well as at the consulates in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal.

Acting High Commissioner Faisal Kakar raised the national flag as the national anthem played in the background.

The event saw a large turnout of Pakistani diaspora members and Canadian nationals of Pakistani origin. During the ceremony, Kakar highlighted the historical significance of the day, acknowledged the contributions of the Pakistani Canadian community, and informed attendees about recent initiatives by the Government of Pakistan to support overseas Pakistanis.

He stressed the importance of unity and harmony within the Pakistani diaspora and encouraged them to intensify their efforts for the socio-economic development of their homeland. Kakar noted that despite facing various challenges, Pakistan has made significant progress in recent years.

He emphasized that this important day symbolizes the spirit and resilience of the Pakistani nation and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by their forefathers in the struggle for independence. It also underscores the responsibility to uphold the ideals of independence and marks the collective journey toward progress, prosperity, and national unity.

Kakar also called on the international community to recognize the plight of the oppressed people in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IIOJK) and reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for their legitimate struggle for the right to self-determination.

“Canada and Pakistan have a longstanding partnership with deep ties between our people. Today, Canada is home to over half a million Canadians of Pakistani origin who contribute to making Canada a more prosperous, diverse, and inclusive place,” he added.

The ceremony also included a cake-cutting, symbolizing unity and progress. In addition to this event, the Pakistani diaspora organized a series of celebrations marking the nation’s 78th Independence Day.
