BAGHDAD: Iraq condemned the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in an Israeli airstrike in Tehran on Wednesday, warning that the brutal attack poses a significant threat to regional stability.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry described the killing as a “flagrant violation of international law” and a “threat to security and stability in the region.”
The assassination of Haniyeh, who was targeted by an Israeli airstrike in Tehran, has sparked strong reactions from various factions within Iraq. The powerful Kataeb Hezbollah denounced the killing as a breach of international norms. The group accused Israel of violating “all rules of engagement” and called for a robust response.
Similarly, the Al-Nujaba movement warned that the killing, along with recent attacks on Hezbollah, represents an escalation of hostilities. In a statement, the group asserted that “the Zionists and Americans have opened the doors of hell,” and vowed that such “assassinations… will not deter us, but strengthen our determination.”
The broader regional conflict has seen increased tensions involving multiple actors. In recent months, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq has claimed responsibility for various attacks against Israel and US interests. These attacks have included drone and rocket strikes, although the Israeli army has reported intercepting such threats before they could breach its airspace.
The Al-Nujaba movement and its allies had previously targeted US troops in Syria and Iraq in response to the conflict between Israel and Hamas forces in Gaza. However, they suspended such operations in late January.
The Israeli airstrike on Haniyeh, which occurred in Iran’s capital, Tehran, has intensified regional tensions. Hamas confirmed Haniyeh’s death, labeling the strike as an act of aggression that would not go unanswered. The Palestinian group also vowed retaliation.
On Tuesday, Israel targeted a Hezbollah stronghold in southern Beirut, striking a senior commander whose fate remains uncertain.
Meanwhile, US forces carried out a “defensive” airstrike last night against Iraqi fighters who were reportedly preparing to launch drones aimed at American and allied troops.
