PESHAWAR: The district administration under “Live Well” initiative has imposed section 144 by banning electronic cigarettes, vapes and nicotine pouches, a government statement said. The sale of these products is now prohibited near hospitals and educational institutions, and to individuals under 21 years of age. Advertising these products in public spaces and on vehicles has also been banned.

The initiative, praised by Blue Veins and the Provincial Alliance for Sustainable Tobacco Control, enforces a ban on the use, sale, distribution, storage, promotion, and sponsorship of e-cigarettes, vapes, and nicotine products. Deputy Commissioner Peshawar issued the ban under Section 144, with plans to establish a permanent ban through comprehensive legislation.

Violators of these regulations will face legal consequences and strict actions will be taken against them. This measure is seen as a significant step by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government towards public health and tobacco control. Qamar Naseem, Programme Manager of Blue Veins, highlighted the initiative as a game-changer for tobacco control, and public health.

The comprehensive approach of the KP government aims to protect communities, reduce tobacco use, and ensure a healthier future.

The KP Health Department has previously implemented a Provincial Tobacco Control Plan, demonstrating a proactive stance in safeguarding communities. The KP Tobacco Control Cell, under the coordination of Ajmal Shah, has been key in enforcing these measures. Qamar Naseem urged the KP Government to consider a permanent legislative ban on vapes and e-cigarettes to ensure sustained progress and a healthier future for youth and communities.
