UNITED NATIONS: The UN’s humanitarian coordinator for the country warned on Wednesday that the residents of conflict-hit Sudan are facing an inferno of brutal violence and are increasingly at risk of famine because of the rainy season and aid blocked.
Tens of thousands of people have been killed and millions displaced since the war started in April 2023 between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Clementine Nkweta-Salami addressing a press conference said famine, and diseases are closing in.
She that fighting is going on and there’s no end in sight. She warned that the grim situation is only expected to worsen.
The UN official went on to say as the lean season sets in the food becomes less available and more expensive.
She noted that more than four million people are facing potential famine. Nkweta-Salami said that the onset of Sudan’s rainy season means that reaching people in need becomes impossible and more difficult.
She the planting season of the country could fail if the UN offices fail to deliver seeds for farmers.
The UN official said after more than a year of conflict, the people of Sudan are stuck in an inferno of brutal violence.
Nkweta-Salami warned the people of Sudan are in the way of a storm that is growing more lethal by the day.
She said the humanitarian community needs to reach people in need, wherever they are.
The United Nations has voiced growing concern in recent days over reports of heavy fighting in densely populated areas.
