SYDNEY: New South Wales and Queensland, two of Australian’s top three populated states, have to face above-normal bushfire potential in summer, a new report warned on Tuesday.

The report was released by the Australian and New Zealand National Council for Fire and Emergency Services (AFAC).

It warned that above-normal bushfire potential is expected in central Australia, southwestern Australia, central western Australia, south Queensland, and New South Wales because of increased fuel loads as a result of substantial rainfall.

Western Tasmania also faces the same bushfire potential as it has already seen a dry spring season.

Some Coastal Areas Face Below-Normal Australian Bushfire Potential in Summer

However, some coastal areas across New South Wales, Victoria, and the Capital Territory have below-normal bushfire potential in summer because of the continued wet outlook, increased fuel moisture, and reduced fuel loads after the 2019-20 bushfire season.

While most of the country shows normal bushfire potential, the report cautioned that people working and living in these areas need to be vigilant because deadly and destructive bushfires can still occur during normal seasons in Australia. Rob Webb, Chief Executive Officer AFAC, said that the report showed a diversity of bushfire risk this season, which reflects the Australian landscape’s diversity. –APP/SPA
