LONDON: The Japanese government on Monday said it had restored its funding of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees and gave a $35 million donation to the organization.
According to the Japanese media donation will be used to provide vital supplies for women and babies in the war hit Gaza Strip, and medical services in the West Bank.
Japanese authorities halted their financial support for UNRWA after Israeli officials in January accused 12 people working for the agency, out of a total of 30,000, of playing a part in the October 7 attacks by Hamas.
Japan, is the sixth-biggest donor to UNRWA. Earlier Japan and 15 other countries put about $450 million of funding on hold after the Israeli allegations.
The decision literary threw operations of the agency in the war-torn Gaza Strip into turmoil. The Japanese government on April 2 announced that it was lifting the suspension.
Some other nations that suspended donations to UNRWA in the aftermath of the accusations have similarly restored the funding, including Australia and Canada.
More than 33,800 Palestinians, mostly females and children, have been martyred in Gaza since October 7, and about 76,400 others wounded.
Much of the enclave has been flattened by Israeli attacks, and Israel has continued to restrict aid flowing into the coastal enclave leading to dramatic shortages of daily necessities.
About 85 percent of Gaza’s population is now internally displaced, and about two-thirds of its infrastructure is now in tatters.
