HYDERABAD: Tennis star and ex-wife of Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, Sania Mirza is likely to contest elections in India as her name for the candidature was suggested by former Indian cricket skipper and Congress leader Mohammed Azharuddin, local media reported on Friday.

In a surprising development, the Congress party is contemplating to field Sania Mirza against All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi from Hyderabad in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

As the Congress party cleared 18 names in a meeting held on Wednesday to hold key discussions on candidates in four states– Telangana, Goa, Jharkhand, UP, and Daman and Diu, it is widely speculated that Sania Mirza’s name was also discussed in the meeting.

Sania Mirza’s name for the slot was suggested by Mohammed Azharuddin. Reports said that both the players have close familial terms as Azharuddin’s son is married to Sania’s sister, Anam Mirza in 2019.

Hyderabad has a diverse demographics and rich cultural heritage. In 2019, around 14 candidates contested against Asaduddin Owaisi. However, he won the seat by taking 58.94% of the total votes polled, showing his dominance.
