Beijing Court Convicts Chinese-Canadian singer for 13 years

Chinese-Canadian pop singer Kris Wu has been jailed for 13 years after being convicted of sex crimes.

A Beijing court convicted the 32-year-old singer and actor of having sex with three women and gathering a crowd to engage in riots. He was arrested last year after a student accused him of rape before 24 other victims came forward.

The court announced a verdict that he would be deported – although he had already been deported to China after his sentence was suspended. On Friday, the Chaoyang District Court in Beijing said Wu would serve 11 years and six months for sleeping with three women in his home in 2020. At that time, they were drunk and did not know or could not resist.”

BBC reported that he was sentenced to one year and 10 months in prison for “collecting people to commit adultery,” the court added. The first person who accused him was a college student Du Meizhu, who posted on social media last year that he met Mr. Wu two years earlier when he was 17.

He said he was invited to a party at his house, where he was forced to drink alcohol and woke up in bed the next day. Mr. Wu has denied the allegations, but at least 24 other victims have accused him of stalking. He was accused of inviting women to drunken karaoke parties.

The singer faces a 600m yuan (£69m) fine for tax evasion. State news agency Xinhua said it used an unprecedented company to explain its global revenue. Mr. Wu was born in China but had Canadian citizenship. He rose to fame as a K-pop boy group EXO member in 2010.
