BEIRUT: Terrorist group Daesh killed nine Syrian soldiers in the war-hit country’s Badia desert on Tuesday, a war monitor said.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights nine Syrian soldiers were killed and three injured when they had gathered in Hama province in central Syria.

Daesh has increased attacks in Syria in recent months, especially in the Badia desert which runs from the outskirts of Damascus to the border of Iraq.

The Britain-based Observatory said on February 2, the extremist group killed five members of forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad.

It further said that a Daesh attack on January 9 killed at least 14 Syrian soldiers in the east of Homs province.

The terrorist group in 2014 after overran large swathes of Syria and Iraq proclaimed its caliphate and started a reign of terror.

It was defeated in Syria in 2019 but its remnants continue to conduct deadly attacks and ambushes, particularly from desert hideouts.

Syria has been devastated by a civil war started in 2011 which has resulted in more than half a million deaths.
