WASHINGTON: The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has endorsed a resolution sponsored by Pakistan, emphasizing the right to self-determination for people subjected to colonial, foreign, and alien occupation, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine.

The resolution, adopted by consensus and co-sponsored by 64 countries, reiterates Pakistan’s persistent efforts since 1981 to bring attention to the struggles of people striving for their inherent right to self-determination.

The text calls upon nations to cease foreign military intervention and occupation of foreign territories, along with acts of repression, discrimination, and maltreatment. The UNGA expresses strong opposition to foreign military intervention, aggression, and occupation, recognizing their adverse impact on the right of people to self-determination and other human rights worldwide. The resolution urges responsible states to immediately halt military interventions, occupations, and all forms of repression and discrimination.

The UNGA also addresses the plight of millions of refugees and displaced persons resulting from these actions, affirming their right to return voluntarily to their homes in safety and honor. Special attention is urged from the UN Human Rights Council to violations of human rights, particularly the right to self-determination, stemming from foreign military interventions, aggression, or occupation.

The adoption of this resolution is hailed as a vindication of the inherent right to self-determination for the people of the Occupied Palestinian Territories and Indian-administered Kashmir, aligning with international law, the UN Charter, and multiple UN resolutions. The Pakistan mission to the UN asserts that this endorsement provides hope to the affected populations in their just struggle for self-determination. Additionally, the resolution requests the UN Secretary-General to report on this matter in the next session of the General Assembly.
