BEIJING: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, is set to preside over a high-level UN Security Council meeting in New York on November 29. The UNSC will discuss the longstanding and complex Palestinian-Israeli issue.
This initiative comes as part of China’s role as the rotating president of the UN Security Council for the month of November.
During a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin outlined the objectives of the upcoming UNSC meeting. He expressed China’s aspiration for all involved parties to engage in fruitful discussions, build consensus, and take tangible actions aimed at alleviating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The overarching goals include achieving a truce, safeguarding Palestinian civilians, and, ultimately, fostering a comprehensive, just, and lasting solution to the Palestinian question through the two-state solution.
China’s Role in Addressing Palestinian Issue
China’s proactive involvement in the Palestinian issue was underscored earlier in November when, under its presidency, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2712 on November 15. The resolution urgently called for humanitarian pauses and corridors throughout the Gaza Strip for an extended period to address the escalating conflict.
Expressing concerns about the potential escalation of hostilities, China had previously called for an early ceasefire to avert a “more serious humanitarian catastrophe.” In furtherance of these efforts, Wang Yi convened the Gaza contact group in Beijing on November 20, engaging in discussions aimed at implementing an immediate ceasefire.
Shortly thereafter, a ceasefire was successfully implemented, a development welcomed by China. Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning expressed optimism that the agreement would contribute to alleviating the humanitarian crisis and reducing tensions in the region.
