US, South Korea, Japan Defence Ministers Will Share North Korea Missile Data Soon

SEOUL: Defence chiefs from the United States, South Korea, and Japan have made agreement to start as planned a real-time data sharing scheme about North Korean missiles in December, South Korea’s ministry of defence stated on Sunday.

U.S. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin held meeting with South Korean Defence Minister Shin Won-sik, in Seoul on Sunday with Japan’s Defence Minister Minoru Kihara joining the session online, Reuters reported.

They discussed strengthening their cooperation in the face of “severe security situation”, Kihara told journalists. He said that it was the first time the three Defence chiefs held such a meeting. Kihara said that they confirmed that they were steadily making adjustments and bringing the process to the last stage. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol also called for the preservation of readiness posture by the US and South Korean militaries in case of “any provocations” by North Korean side.

Similarly, US President Joe Biden also agreed with President Yoon and Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at an August 18 meeting that by the end of the current the three sides would share North Korea missile warning data in real time.

The Defence ministers also denounced increasing military cooperation between Russia and North Korea as a violation of the United Nations resolutions, the South Korean ministry of defence said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff also held dialogue with his South Korean counterpart in Seoul, South Korea on Sunday, officials said.

In his first visit to South Korea since he took office in October, the top US military discussed the “continuous provocations” of North Korea side including missile launches, and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to the defence of South Korean side, the South Korean joint chiefs of staff said.
