MOSCOW: Foreign Minister of Russian Federation Sergei Lavrov is expected to visit Iran on Monday for discussions with regional counterparts, his ministry’s spokeswoman said.
Foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova talking to local media confirmed Lavrov’s presence at the second 3+3 planned talks in Tehran.
The talks are taking place amid tensions over the Middle East and unresolved disputes between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Last month Azerbaijan launched a lightning offensive against Armenian separatists in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Earlier Iranian state media said that the foreign ministers of Russia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Armenia had been invited to meet for the discussions.
The 3+3 format was established with the objective of resolving regional issues through the inclusion of regional countries and the exclusion of extra-regional and Western countries.

The first 3+3 meeting was held in Moscow last year at the level of deputy foreign ministers and without the presence of Georgia.
Armenia has confirmed that its foreign minister would be attending the talks. Though full list of attendees has not yet been released, but Armenia’s immediate neighbour Georgia on Sunday said that it would not be attending the regional talks.
Georgia has applied for EU membership along with Ukraine and Moldova after a conflict between Russia and Ukraine started in February 2022.
