WASHINGTON: During a campaign reception in Washington, US President Joe Biden shared a vision of the world order, suggesting that the current US-led system has lost momentum. In his remarks, he outlined a vision where Washington would take the lead in shaping a new global order.
Biden highlighted recent diplomatic achievements, including securing financial aid for Ukraine from Japan and South Korea and signing a significant rail and ports agreement with the EU, India, and Saudi Arabia at the G20 summit in New Delhi. He stressed the importance of bold action and self-confidence to forge unprecedented global unity.
He stated, “We were in a post-war period for 50 years, which worked quite well, but it seems that era has lost its momentum. We require a fresh, innovative world order.”
The post-World War II world order initially played out as a bipolar contest between the US and the USSR for global influence. However, the demise of the Soviet Union ushered in a unipolar world order with the US as the sole superpower. Today, American dominance faces new challenges, particularly from the rapidly growing Chinese economy, now the world’s second-largest.
China, under President Xi Jinping, has advocated for a “multipolar world” defined by international relations governed by laws and treaties rather than by rules enforced solely by the US. Russian President Vladimir Putin has echoed these sentiments, envisioning a multipolar world where individual “civilization-states” can pursue their interests independently, free from the influence of a single hegemonic power.
This discussion about the shape of the future world order reflects a changing global landscape where multiple powers, including Russia and China, are asserting themselves and questioning the long-standing dominance of the United States.
