MOSCOW: Poland’s recent election results, which have seen pro-EU opposition parties securing a parliamentary majority, offer little hope for the strained ties between Warsaw and Moscow to improve, according to the Kremlin. Historically marked by tension, the relationship between Russia and Poland has deteriorated even further since Russia’s offensive in Ukraine began in February last year.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed skepticism about the election results leading to any significant changes in bilateral relations. He commented, “Honestly, it is unlikely at the moment.” Peskov noted that no elements within the Polish establishment have openly or covertly suggested the need to mend relations with Russia.

“The Poles have shown a strong disapproval of us, with an unfriendly attitude and a decidedly hostile stance on issues concerning Russia,” Peskov emphasized, underscoring the existing animosities.

He lamented the state of Russo-Polish relations, calling it “absurd that two neighboring states are this hostile to each other.” Despite sharing a short border along Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave, the two nations have grappled with a litany of historical issues that have strained their ties for centuries.

In addition to the historical disputes, Poland has emerged as a key ally of Ukraine, further positioning Warsaw against Russia. The country has taken in over a million Ukrainian refugees who fled Moscow’s offensive in Ukraine, exacerbating the tensions in Russo-Polish relations.
