KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has revealed that China has provided assurances of continued negotiations with Southeast Asian nations regarding disputed territorial claims in the South China Sea.

In an interview with news channel, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim disclosed that China has given its commitment to engage in ongoing negotiations with Southeast Asian nations, avoiding actions that could lead to further escalation in the South China Sea. The assurance was conveyed by Chinese Premier Li Qiang, following Beijing’s release of a contentious map featuring a “10-dash line” that extended its territorial claims in the disputed waters.

Notably, Malaysia and several other Southeast Asian countries have rejected China’s map. Prime Minister Anwar emphasized that Premier Li’s commitment to negotiation was “clear and categorical,” providing reassurance to the region’s stability.

Expressing concerns over rising tensions in the area, particularly China’s efforts to assert sovereignty claims over Taiwan, Anwar stressed the importance of both parties avoiding “unnecessary provocations” that could impact the broader region.

The Prime Minister also addressed doubts surrounding his government’s commitment to democratic reforms. He clarified that he would not interfere in decisions made by Malaysia’s attorney general and emphasized the need to respect laws against seditious remarks involving the country’s monarchy.

Regarding LGBTQ rights, Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s stance of non-acceptance but emphasized that the LGBTQ community should not be harassed. He also criticized his government’s decision to ban Swatch watches celebrating the Pride movement, acknowledging that it was an “excessive” measure. Malaysia’s home ministry had confiscated and banned the sale of rainbow-colored watches from Swatch’s Pride collection, citing concerns about morality and public interest.

While the ban was associated with legal consequences, Prime Minister Anwar recognized that there was a consensus in the country against LGBTQ rights but stressed the importance of treating the community with respect.

This development showcases Malaysia’s ongoing engagement with China over the South China Sea disputes and Prime Minister Anwar’s position on various domestic issues, including LGBTQ rights and democratic reforms.
