WASHINGTON:  The US government said Thursday it was giving temporary legal status to Afghan migrants who have been living in the US for a little over a year, AP reported.

The officials said that the decision would give Temporary Protected Status to Afghan citizens who arrived after March 15, 2022, and before September 20, 2023.

According to AP, this status does not give Afghan migrants a long-term right to stay in the US. It added that the status does protect Afghans from deportation.

“Today’s decision is a recognition of the current country situation in Afghanistan, Eskinder Negash head of the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants said.
