KABUL: In a significant diplomatic move, Zhao Xing, the newly-appointed Chinese ambassador to Afghanistan, reiterated China’s unwavering commitment to Afghanistan’s national sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity during his presentation of credentials to the Islamic Emirate’s Prime Minister, Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund, in Kabul.
This reassuring statement comes at a critical juncture in Afghanistan’s history, as the country navigates through complex political and economic transitions.
Ambassador Zhao Xing’s meeting with Prime Minister Akhund was marked by a mutual pledge to strengthen relations between Kabul and Beijing. The Islamic Emirate’s Prime Minister emphasized the importance of enhancing ties with China, highlighting the potential for collaboration in various domains.
One noteworthy aspect of this appointment is that it marks the first ambassadorial assignment since August 2021 when the Islamic Emirate assumed control as foreign forces withdrew from Afghanistan. This development underscores China’s determination to maintain and foster diplomatic relations with Afghanistan, despite the shifting geopolitical landscape.
Bilal Karimi, the deputy spokesman of the Islamic Emirate, conveyed Ambassador Zhao Xing’s message after presenting his credentials. He stated that China’s role in Afghanistan would be instrumental in promoting economic development and peace within the country. Importantly, Ambassador Zhao Xing reiterated China’s commitment to non-interference in Afghanistan’s internal political affairs, a stance consistent with their longstanding diplomatic principles.
Political analysts are viewing China’s renewed commitment and its appointment of a new ambassador as significant steps. Salim Paigir, a political analyst, emphasized that China’s interest in fostering close relations with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan bodes well for the Afghan people, underscoring the potential benefits of economic cooperation and diplomatic engagement.
Kamran Aman, another political analyst, emphasized that China’s policy towards Afghanistan and its people has remained consistent over the years. While the appointment of new ambassadors is a routine occurrence in international diplomacy, it is the underlying policy and commitment that holds the most significance for Afghanistan’s future.
Notably, Ambassador Zhao Xing takes the reins from his predecessor, Wang Yu, who served as China’s ambassador to Afghanistan from 2019 until last month. During his tenure, Wang Yu played an active role in maintaining and strengthening China’s relations with Afghanistan.
