SKARDU: Chairman Prime Minister’s Task Force for Gandhara Tourism Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani on Tuesday termed the establishment of Gandhara Corridor as indispensable for the prosperity and development of the country.
Dr. Ramesh was talking to the media persons during his visit to the ancient Manthal Buddha Rock, Gilgit Baltistan (GB) along with a delegation of Japanese experts and local citizens.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that the mesmerizing natural beauty of GB is a great source of attraction for tourists from across the globe.
Regarding his proposed Gandhara Corridor project, he said that the air corridor being established between Islamabad and the capitals of Buddhist-majority countries will facilitate a large number of Buddhist tourists from around the world to land at the Islamabad International Airport.
He said that hundreds of years ago, the Gautama Buddha’s followers used to cross the high rocky cliffs of GB to go to China, Japan, and Korea, etc.
Dr. Ramesh added that Buddha Manthal Rock’s site has also been a place of worship for the Tibetans. Historically, Skardu has been an important part of Buddhist Tibet in the past, and even today, it is called Little Tibet (Tibet Khurd).
He said that the image and carvings of the enshrining Gautham Buddha from ancient times on Gilgit-Baltistan’s rocky cliffs are evidence of religious devotion to the religious leader.
