Niger Army Accuses France of Deploying Troops with Eye to ‘Intervention’

NIAMEY, NIGER: Niger’s military government has accused France of deploying troops in several West African nations with a view to ” intervention”, AFP reported on Saturday.

In a statement, Niger’s military government Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane said that France continues to deploy its troops in several ECOWAS nations as part of measures for aggression against Niger”.

Ties with France degraded quickly after France stood by deposed President Mohamed Bazoum after the July military coup. The African country is also involved in a stalemate with ECOWAS, which has also threatened to interfere militarily if diplomatic efforts to return President Bazoum to office fail.

On August 3, Niger’s military leaders rejected several military cooperation deals with Paros, which has around 1,500 soldiers stationed in the African country as part of a wider war against militants.

On September 1, Niger’s military regime said its chief of staff had “received the commander of French forces in the Sahel… to exchange views on a plan for the disconnection of French military capabilities”.
