PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has started a crackdown against shops and stores selling sugar above the prescribed maximum retrial price.

Secretary Food Abid Wazir said that 31 people had been imprisoned for selling sugar at exorbitant rates during his visits to various areas to inspect sugar prices.

Wazir informed the media that all those detained were engaged in selling sugar at Rs. 200 per kg in supermarkets and retail outlets despite the official price being Rs. 176 per kg. He emphasized that individuals responsible for creating artificial sugar shortages should not receive any leniency.

When questioned about the apprehension of major players involved in sugar smuggling to Afghanistan, he provided no substantial response, stating, “We are presently conducting raids on different supermarkets and shops to ensure they sell sugar at the designated price.”
