Pakistan’s Prime Minister “Certain” Regarding Elections by Four Months

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s interim Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has said that he was “certain” regarding the general election being held within the upcoming three to four months, local media reported on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister expressed these remarks during an interview with a private television.  Responding to a question, he commented, “I think within a few months and few months can be translated into three, or four that needs to be seen…this will accomplish, and we will go to the elections,” the Prime Minister commented.

Asked whether he expected the elections would be held within four months, he replied, ” I am not (just) hopeful (rather) I am sure.”

He added considering the limited time, the caretaker government was considering to prioritize several policy matters to at least lay a foundation for any future government to enable that to carry forward the journey.

Electricity and Sugar Crisis

Responding to a question, he explained that even after the expiry of the term, the country’s President could continue in his office till the election of his successor. However, the chairman Senate would fill the post in case the President voluntarily gives up the country’s top office.

Coming to the matter of electricity bills, Kakar said the government was coming up with several measures like short and mid-term solutions to convert the oil-based electricity plants to run on local coal.

About the sugar price hike, Kakar said the interim government had asked the provinces to activate the price control committees and take strict actions against the hoarders.

He said that the Special Investment Facilitation Council had been constituted as a forum to resolve the concerns hindering the investment projects._APP
