WASHINGTON: U.S. President Joe Biden has expressed his disappointment over Chinese President Xi Jinping’s decision not to attend the upcoming G20 summit in India, western media reported on Sunday.

“I am disappointed … but I am going to get to see him,” Biden told journalists.

Biden is scheduled to visit India from September 7-10 to attend a summit of the Group of 20 leaders. After participating in the summit, he would tour Vietnam to strengthen U.S. relations in Asia.

Xi is likely to skip G-20 summit and Chinese Premier Li Qiang will represent Beijing at the meeting in New Delhi.

Earlier Biden said he would meet with President Xi at the end of this year.

Biden and Xi had met in November 2022 in Bali, Indonesia, where they agreed to work closely to ease tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

The US president is expected to invite Xi in November to San Francisco at the conference of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum hosted by the US.

Biden has recently imposed restrictions over US investment in Chinese high-tech, a move strongly condemned by China.  It said such a move was contrary to the free-trade principles. The Biden administration justifying the move said that it would safeguard US security.
