Save the Children stated that as many as 31,000 kids lack access to medical treatment for illnesses since the charity was forced to close about 57 of its centers in the African country.

Sudan was plunged into fighting after monthslong tensions between the rival generals exploded into open war on April 15. The war has turned the capital and other urban parts into battlegrounds. Several citizens live without electricity and water, and the nation’s healthcare system has collapsed.

Save the Children’s director for Sudan, Arif Noor, said that they never did think they would see kids dying from hunger, but this is a reality in the African country.  About 4.4 million people were forced to leave their areas either to safer places in Sudan the UN said.

The charity group said that at least 316 children died due to illnesses in the While Nile province between May and July.  It added that about 2,400 children have been hospitalized in the past 8 months with severe acute malnutrition. It disclosed that 132 kids passed away in the state-run Children’s Hospital between April and July in Qadarif province of Sudan.

The UN said that Sudan’s war and economic failure have driven around 20.3 million people into high levels of severe food insecurity.
