Pakistan’s nuclear safety ranking has increased. In the security and control category, Pakistan’s ranking on the most effective measures has improved by seven points, with Pakistan scoring a positive plus 25 points. According to the NTI index, Pakistan ranks 19th and India ranks 20th in the protection of nuclear assets. while Pakistan ranks 33rd and India ranks 38th out of 47 in terms of protection of installations. India also has 53 points while Pakistan has scored 58 in the protection of installations.

According to the report of the American organization Nuclear Threat Institute, compared to other countries, Pakistan has improved itself a lot in the security and control category.  In 2020-21, Nuclear Security Index of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, an American think tank working on nuclear issues, Pakistan recorded the highest improvement in terms of nuclear material. The report examines various countries in three respects, including the classification of weapons security of countries, possessing nuclear weapons weighing more than 1 kilogram, and the global anti-theft of nuclear material of 153 countries possessing weapons weighing less than 1 kilogram. The list also includes ratings on efforts and measures taken by 46 countries to prevent sabotage of nuclear facilities.

In two of the three classifications, Pakistan’s overall performance is recorded better than that of neighboring India, while in the third category, Pakistan does not count because Pakistan is placed in the category of weapons weighing more than one kilogram.

Pakistan is one rank higher than India in the overall ranking of nuclear material safety. Pakistan is five ranks better than India in the ranking of preventing acts of sabotage of nuclear facilities. The report states that Pakistan has adopted new procedures for on-site security and cyber security, and has taken better measures to prevent insider threats. In the overall ranking of the index, Pakistan got seven positive points, which increased the ranking of Pakistan.

According to the index, Pakistan’s ranking has improved in recent years due to new rules on facility security. Pakistan has scored 47 points against 41 while India has 53 points in the protection of installations while Pakistan has scored 58. In this way, Pakistan’s measures regarding the protection of nuclear assets have left India far behind

Pakistan got eight positive points in the security category in 2014, two positive points in 2016 and six positive points in 2018.

The report states that this ranking has been issued since 2012 and since then, Pakistan has the second-best record in the category of security and control of a country with so many points compared to other countries.

The report also states that there are only four countries that continue to increase their arsenals. Among these countries are Pakistan, India, the United Kingdom, and North Korea. The Nuclear Threat Initiative is a non-profit, nonpartisan global security organization focused on reducing nuclear and biological threats to humanity. It is important to note that regional tensions, the proliferation of nuclear weapons and the materials to make them, as well as new technologies such as terror and cyber threats, mean that the risk of using a nuclear weapon or device is increasing. At the same time, the capacity of governments to manage increasingly complex global security threats is eroding.
