RIYADH: Saudi falcon breeding facility put the most expensive bird of prey on display which fetched a record SR500,000 ($134,000) at the sale.
The previous mark was SR270,000.
The breed of falcon ‘Cherrug’ locally called Hur, was one of many birds to get serious bidders at the third International Falcon Breeders Auction.
The sales reached SR1.5 million, with two Saudi birds getting sold for a joint price of SR570,000.
Bidding for the Cherrug from Al-Nader Falconry started from SR50,000 before reaching the record price of SR500,000.
A second free-range bird from Al-Dahas Falconry was put up for sale fetched SR70,000.
Saudi Falcons Club in Malham, about 80 km north of Riyadh, headquarters of the Saudi sports was attended by leading international breeding farms. The sale will continue till Aug. 25.
Newly opened Bahrain Falcons Center showed seven special specimens in its space.
Majed Al-Subaihi, representing the Bharain’s club, stated that breeders from across the globe keenly take part in the event.
Al-Subaihi remarked that Bahrain has been in the event since its first edition, and over the years there has been great improvement in terms of facilities given by the Saudi Falcons Club besides an increase in the number of visitors.
The event has the best breeds all in one place, and gives outstanding facilities to the participants, he said.
Over SR10 million has been recorded in the last two editions and over 800 falcons were sold.
The event attracts falconers from all over the world and elite birds of prey are showcased. The event also synchronises with the cultural heritage of the region.
The event is also promoted and projected to be the ultimate destination for falconry enthusiasts globally.
Walid Al-Taweel, the representative of the Saudi Falcons Club, stated the event is held to give a protected and flourishing market for the falconry besides establishing a leading role in research and development with innovation in breeding and care.
Al-Taweel said that the club hosts the event for falconers and breeders all under one roof for a safe and reliable market.
