ISLAMABAD: In honour of Iqbal Day, the federal government has announced Thursday, November 9, to be a public holiday.
The Cabinet Division has announced that this Thursday, November 9, would be observed nationwide as a public holiday.
Across the country, November 9 is recognized as “Iqbal Day” in honor of Dr. Allama Mohammad Iqbal. It would be his 146th birth anniversary this year. Millions of Muslims throughout the subcontinent were inspired to seek an independent country where they could freely practice Islam thanks in large part to the influence of Dr. Iqbal. Mosques would offer special prayers before dawn in support of Pakistan’s development and prosperity.
Dr. Iqbal, known as the “Poet of the East” in Pakistan and globally, was born in Sialkot on November 9, 1877. Iqbal was a well-known poet and philosopher. He is recognized for his poetry and for using his political influence to advocate for the establishment of an independent country for Muslims. His speech at Allahabad in 1930 was a watershed moment for pre-partition politics.
Allama Iqbal’s speech provided Muslims on the subcontinent with a clear direction and their own identity in their pursuit of Pakistan. A ceremony to change the guards will also be at his mausoleum in Lahore.
