GENEVA: Some 843,130 people in Sudan have been internally displaced since the eruption of the conflict last month, the International Organization for Migration said Wednesday.
The IOM warned in a statement that an additional 1.8 million people are likely to be internally displaced if the war continues. It said that there were nearly 1.1 million refugees and about 3.8 million internally displaced people in Sudan before the conflict. While about 259,000 people have already escaped from Sudan to nearby countries, it said that more than a million migrants and refugees impacted by the turmoil may move to neighboring nations if the war continues.
It added that humanitarian aid is now projected to be required by more than 25.7 million people both inside and outside the country. The IOM also developed a response plan and appealed for 209 million dollars in order to provide vital humanitarian aid to the conflict-hit countries.
The appeal included the urgent need of 105 million dollars for Sudan and 104 million dollars for the response in Libya, Chad, Egypt, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and the Central African Republic, it said.
Inevitable humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan
It said that millions are in pressing need of basic aid such as food, water, and shelter. If the aid operations do not run timely, the public of Sudan will face a massive humanitarian catastrophe.
The IOM head made an appeal to the international community to urgently support relief operations and mobilize financial resources to fulfill the mounting needs. –AFP/APP
