KABUL: At least 80 Afghan citizens, including children, have died in Sunday’s shipwreck off the southern coast of Italy, Afghan rulers said on Tuesday.

The Afghan ministry for foreign affairs said in a statement that it had learned that 80 Afghan refugees had died in the southern sea of Italy. It added that the refugees were travelling from Turkey to Italy. The statement said that they urged all citizens of Afghanistan to avoid travelling to foreign countries via irregular migration.
The United Nations refugee agency said that half of arrivals by sea between Italy and Turkey were citizens of Afghanistan.

However, rescuers and officials have so far confirmed at least 64 people had died following a sailboat sank in sea in Italy. It added that 8 people have been saved and many were believed to be missing.
