70 Hurt as Magnitude 5.8 Quake Jolts NW Iran

ISLAMABAD: a 5.8 earthquake on Wednesday jolted Iran’s northwest (NW) region near its border with Turkey and hurt at least 70 people.

As per the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck West Azerbaijan province’s city of Khoy at 1008 GMT at a depth of just 10 kilometers.

In its statement, the University of Tehran’s Seismological Center said the earthquake’s magnitude was 5.4 and had a depth of 12 kilometers.

NW Iran quake damages 300 houses

Officials in the calamity-hit area, as per state television, said in a bid to reach safety around 70 people had been injured. They added in 15 villages over 300 houses had been damaged.

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Habash-e Olya on the border with Turkiye in 2020 in which 9 nine had been killed in Turkiye.

In 1990, Iran’s deadliest earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck northern Iran and left 40,000 dead and hurt 300,000 while around 500,000 people had been made homeless.
