BROWNSVILLE: A tragic incident occurred on Sunday in Texas, where a driver crashed into a group of people outside a facility housing migrants, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals and leaving as many as six others injured. The incident took place in Brownsville, a border city located at the southernmost tip of Texas.

According to Martin Sandoval, a local police spokesman, the driver of a sport utility vehicle lost control and “ran over several people that were waiting at a bus stop.”

Emergency services responded swiftly, and between four and six injured individuals were transported to the hospital for medical treatment.

Eyewitnesses at the scene detained the motorist until the arrival of law enforcement officers, who subsequently charged the driver with reckless driving.

Sandoval mentioned that additional charges might be brought against the driver in due course, although he did not provide further details.

Investigation launched into Texas incident

Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine whether the fatal crash was accidental or intentional, as it remains unclear at this stage.

The identities of the victims and their affiliation with the migrant community have not been immediately established.

This tragic incident comes as authorities prepare for the expiration on Thursday of a federal policy implemented during the administration of former President Donald Trump.

The policy, known as Title 42, grants border patrol officers the authority to deport or turn away migrants without accepting their asylum applications.

The looming expiration of this policy has raised concerns among authorities about a potential surge in undocumented migrants attempting to enter the United States.

The homeless shelter situated across the street from the crash site is presently accommodating some migrants due to the ongoing “influx” of individuals crossing the border from Mexico, as confirmed by Sandoval.

Law enforcement agencies and local authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, while offering support and condolences to the families of the victims.
